About Part 1 Multiple Choice Cloze
You read a short text which has 12 gaps. For each gap you have to select the missing word from a choice of four (A, B, C or D). In the exam you transfer your answer to a special answer sheet. Part 1 tests your knowledge of vocabulary.

1. Synonyms
You should be able to identify the correct word from a selection of similar words that matches a particular context or goes with another word:

2. Collocations
You will need to be able to identify common collocations, that is words that go together. For example:

3. Phrasal verbs
Phrasal verbs are frequently tested in Part 1 of this paper. You need to look out for missing verbs or prepositions/particles.

You will need to be able to identify common collocations, that is words that go together. For example:

5. Linking words
Make sure you know the difference between the common linking words
used in English. Example: 'despite', 'although' etc.

Dos and don'ts
Look at the text before and after the gap. Don't leave the answer sheet blank for any question. If you don't know the correct answer you should always make a guess.
