Speaking Part 3: conversation between candidates (1, 2)

In Part 3 of the Speaking Paper you will be required to talk to another student for about three minutes. You will be given a picture or a diagram of some kind and asked to carry out a task such as solving a problem or reaching a decision.

  • Remember that the examiner does not take part, so talk to your partner and make eye contact with him or her.
  • Don't try to impress the examiner by talking too much. This is supposed to be a conversation.
  • Work as a team rather than as two individuals.
1 When you are assessed the examiner will mark you under the five categories below. Which of the first four do you feel are your strong and which your weak points?
  • Grammar and vocabulary
  • Fluency
  • Pronunciation
  • Interactive communication
  • Achievement of task
2 Work with another student and read the following situation:

You are planning a week long touring holiday with a friend around the country that you're studying in. You want to see as much as possible but don't want to spend too much money on transport. Look at the types of transport shown here. Talk to your partner about which one(s) you might use and why. You should talk for about three minutes.

3 Carry out the task using some of the expressions below. When you have finished, discuss with your partner how well you did in terms of the 5 categories in Exercise 1.
