The best ice-breaker for a new class (pre-intermediate+) I know is : Give each student a sticky label. They mark their name in the middle (can be mixed up - Anne becomes "Nean") then in the top right-hand corner a place which was important in their life, in the top left a year which was important, in the bottom right a person who was important and in the bottom left the person they would most like to meet. (These indications can be varied ad infinitum!) Then they stick the labels on their chests and move around the class discussing the reasons for their choices.
