Read the following introduction to the Part 5 Multiple Choice Cloze task and then try an exam-style test.
Summary
Part 5 of the Reading and Use of English paper has a text followed by six multiple-choice questions with four choices A, B, C or D.
The questions will appear in the same order as the information in the text.
The questions will test your ability to identify main ideas or specific details in the text.
A question might ask you to interpret the tone of the text or the writer's purpose for writing it.
Tips
As with all text-based tasks in the exam, read the whole text through quickly before trying to answer any questions. This will help you gain an overall or 'global' understanding of the content.
Some students like to read through all the questions first and then as they read the text for the first time, try to spot where the answers might be situated. Again, if you do this, avoid answering the questions at this stage.
Examine the relevant question and decide which options are definitely wrong. Look for evidence in the text to confirm they are wrong.
If the same word appears in an option and in the text, this does not mean that this option is the correct answer. In fact, quite often it's a sign that it's not!
Instead, look for synonyms in the options and in the text. Finding a synonym in an option can be helpful - you're being tested on your breadth of vocabulary after all.
Always check for evidence in the text for your answer. If you can't find the evidence, you've probably chosen the wrong option.
