Introduction

See below how prepositional phrases might be tested and then practise with Use of English style quizzes.
You are likely to be tested on your knowledge of prepositional phrases in Parts 1, 2 and 4 of Paper 1 Reading and Use of English.

Prepositions can be used in various combinations with other parts of speech to form fixed prepositional phrases:

verb + preposition
I don't believe in spending too many hours at work.
I hope you're going to pay for those goods.


noun + preposition
I'm afraid I don't have any influence over the manager.
You should try to have more confidence in your abilities.


adjective + preposition
She is fluent in seven different languages.
I don't think your point is relevant to the discussion.


expressions beginning with a preposition
I broke the window by mistake.
The soldier was standing on guard outside the camp.




Prepositional Phrases >> Part 1: Multiple Choice Cloze
Reminder: Part 1 consists of a short text which has 8 gaps. For each gap you have to select the missing word from a choice of four (A, B, C or D).

Example:
I've always been a little suspicious ........ the fact that they have so much money.
(A) of     (B) with     (C) in     (D) on

Answer: 'of'



Prepositional Phrases >> Part 2: Open Cloze
Reminder: Part 2 consists of a short text which has 8 gaps. For each gap you have to add the missing word.

Example:
I'm not accustomed ........ driving on the left-hand side of the road.

Answer: 'to'



Prepositional Phrases >> Part 4: Key Word Transformation
Reminder: You are given a complete sentence followed by a second, incomplete sentence. You have to complete the second sentence so that it has the same meaning as the first using a word given that must not be changed.

Example:
She is always participating in charity events.
PART
She is always ........... charity events.

Answer: 'taking part in'
